Second hotel in Florence to open September 2019
The Student Hotel group has announced the acquisition of its second site in Florence with plans to begin construction in 2018 and open in September 2019. It will be the company’s fourth hotel in Italy.
Located in Viale Belfiore at the former Fiat building, the 26,000-square metre destination will form the major part of a mixed development project which will contain the 670-room Student Hotel, as well as residential units, shops, and parking.
Belfiore is an up and coming area attracting interest due to its new, Norman-Foster designed railway station, providing high-speed rail links to the rest of the country and beyond. The addition of the new Student Hotel will increase the attractiveness of the current building, with internal structural changes and an additional floor, further elevating the neighbourhood.
Bought at public auction for €28.2 million, the purchase and subsequent development of its second hybrid co-living, co-working building in the city makes The Student Hotel one of the biggest investors in Florence.
The Student Hotel is currently putting the finishing touches to its first Italian property which will open in Florence this September (2017), followed by The Student Hotel Bologna in 2018 and Rome in 2019.
Charlie MacGregor, The Student Hotel founder, and CEO said: “Florence is a hugely significant city for The Student Hotel. We chose it as the location for our first hotel outside of the Netherlands, the start of our international expansion, and are delighted to be the main contributor in the regeneration of the Belfiore area.”
“We really believe in this project as the first anchor point for the future in this area.”
“I am confident that, with the support of the Mayor’s office, we can design and build a truly iconic building for this up and coming area of Florence.”
Q&A with Charlie MacGregor, The Student Hotel founder, and CEO:
How did The Student Hotel acquire this site?
“The location on Viale Belfiore, an ex Fiat location, was acquired by The Student Hotel at public auction, with a bid of 28.2 million euros.”
When will the development begin?
“Construction will start in 2018 with an opening date of September 2019. The project will be supervised by The Student Hotel’s in-house architect: Saimon Idiakez.”
What facilities will the hotel have?
“The Student Hotel is a leader of hybrid hospitality; co-living, co-working communities. While every Student Hotel is unique, they all contain large communal areas open to all residents, guests, businesses and the local community, with rooms for students, stay awhile and short-term guests, co-work facilities for local business, study areas, and restaurant. The Student Hotel at Belfiore is a mixed project. In addition to the 670-room, 26,000 square metre hotel there will be residential and retail units and parking. This is an up and coming area which is creating interest because of the new, Norman Foster designed railway station with high-speed links.”
Why is Florence an important city for The Student Hotel?
“The Student Hotel is committed to creating jobs, regenerating communities and providing spaces for entrepreneurs to flourish. The acquisition of the Belfiore site, alongside our soon-to-open hotel overlooking Viale Strozzi, makes The Student Hotel one of the biggest investors in Florence.”
